Swiss Chinese Global Forums

Founded on August 28, 2019, the Swiss Chinese Law Association already advertises eleven "Global Forums" on a busy webpage full of pictures and slogans zooming in and sliding by. The website includes a "SCLA Future Cloud," whatever that is. The About page includes "The Voice," which speaks of "[l]awyers in Switzerland [whose] experience ... goes back to at least the international arbitration between the UK and the USA on the Alabama case" and "Chinese lawyers [whose] first-hand experience of the new China [is] based on ancestral roots and on their deep understanding of the benefits of harmony." These lawyers, it assures us, "will be able to contribute to the development of new solutions for the benefit of our clients, in our respective countries, and beyond, without forgetting what the Romans had already stated so clearly: 'ius est ars boni et aequi'."

The SCLA's "Mission and Values" include "Inspire the future of legal profession" and "Motivate next generation." Despite the bilateral name, anyone can "Apply for the Membership."

The Global Forum invited me to attend "as a member from ABA." Being among the hundreds of thousands of American Bar Association members with no expertise in the field, I did not "make the forum submission [for possible publication] in the Swiss Chinese Law Review Journal." I could not find a webpage with a specific program for the talks on Friday, but there were large pictures and biographies for the speakers.

The Chinese and Swiss lawyers designated as the association's leaders may be bona fide stewards of a  farsighted organization, but what are these lawyers thinking when they designate commercial mass mail as confidential and privileged? They also enjoy a speed dating-like method of intellectual discourse "to exchange the newest and most brilliant plan."

The Flaky Academic Journals blog has some information on the people behind the association's name.

Subject: Invitation for David Kaye -EU-China Investment Forum and the Investment Mediation Program
    To David Kaye,
You are invited to join as a delegate for the SCLA EU-China Investment Forum(to be held on 13.00 CET, 26th Friday) as well as the Investment Mediation Expert Training Program (to be held on 13.00 CET, 27th Saturday) online.
I attached the agendas for your reference. To register the program, please visit: ... .
The Comprehensive Agreement on Investment between China and the EU represents a step towards a closer integration, on equal terms, between these two great economic powers. Many of the assumptions that we have taken for granted regarding the future of international law and business may be wrong. Are businesses and lawyers ready for these future transformations? What will it mean for investments in technology, a mainstay of China’s industrial relations with the rest of the world for the past forty years? How should lawyers approach resolving international disputes in a multilateral world? These essential questions and more will be at the heart of the SCLA’s upcoming global forum on EU-China Investment (March 26th ) as well as the Mediation in Investment Training Program (March 27th ).
The answer will of course require both theory and practice. Therefore, the SCLA is proud to present a prestigious line-up of experienced speakers to share their valuable knowledge at our forum, followed by a one-day training session for participants to test their skills in an international investment mock mediation. For the first time, our forum includes not only lawyers and academics but other professions with key insights on relations between China and the rest of the world, including senior management, government advice and journalism.
Opening on the meaning of the CAI will be Xiaobing Tang, (former senior counsellor at the WTO), Loudres Casanvoa(director of Cornell University’s Emerging Markets Institute), Thomas Pauken (Commentor at CCTV China), Rotem Kopel (CEO at Mind Matters Foundation); Following that, the event will discuss the technology and investment, which is moderated by the former CEO of Sony Europe Nicolas Babin, jointly held by Safak Herdem (Founder of the Herdem Law), Balaz Nemethi (President at Decentralized Identity Foundation), Prathiba Shah (COO at Skyhive) and Michele Char(COO at Blue Tree); The 2nd panel will focus the dispute resolution, and it will be moderated by Ana Jaimes(Lawyer at Stein Ray LLP), John Chigbu (Managing Partner at Chigbu & Co, LLP), Nacmettin Kayma (US country director at Present Office of Turkey), Jiaxi Jiang (Partner at Jurisino Law Group), Federico Antich (Antich Law) , Philip Hackett QC(Barrister at 36 Group).
The 3rd SCLA Mediation Expert Training program in investment mediation is designed for a small group training to practice, where the delegates will observe and engage in the practice of inter-state investment mediation. The experienced trainers will provide in-hand guidance for the participants during the practice.
The game is changing and yesterday’s rules are no guarantee for success. Take this opportunity to join us to sharpen your understanding against the most up-to-date expertise and to enjoy a challenging training session that will prepare you for a multilateral world while making valuable new contacts in Europe, China and the wider world. If multilateralism means cooperation, join those who are already working together and sharing knowledge.

Greetings! Greetings for March! And I wish you and your family a great start to March! By the meteorological calendar, March is the start of spring, and so do we.
I am very honoured to introduce you to the initiative of SCLA Fellowship Program. This is the first program that we wish to establish to create better impacts in the field of law and public policies. We will open the applications for leaders from the various background (even with non-lawyers), which they represent different industries and background. We will routinely organize the fellowship event to promote the connection with the lawyers and public policymakers. Please fulfil the questionnaire here. If you are interested in discussing further actions, you can also contact Ms Yinying Gu (coordinator of the Fellowship Program) at yinying.gu@cnsla.org.
Meanwhile, SCLA is also establishing the SCLA Lawyers/ Law Firm network to promote a more transparent and better collaboration between the lawyers/law firms and the potential clients, especially between Chinese and foreign colleagues. The potential contribution of the network will also help to facilitate a better mechanism of collaboration and promotion. We plan to have a joint session to discuss how to establish the network on 12th Friday (next week) at 13:00 CET Time. Please register here for the initial meeting.
Thank you so much and I am very looking forward to your response.

  3. They're sending me unsolicited emails full of probably dangerous hyperlinks every couple days. It's obviously a scam of some kind.

  4. It is not necessary to be a lawyer to get these mailings. Which is really weird. I've wondered if te unsubscribe works but I am not in the habit of clicking links in scamming mails.
