"Reducing the Mystic" at Global Scientific Guild

Originating from a server in India, today's conference spam seeks speakers for the "2nd Global Webinar On Forensic Science." Coming hot on the heels of the first "Global Webinar" in March 2021, the second installment is scheduled for July 2021.

The "focus," if it can be called that, of the first effort was “Exploring the new heights of Excellence in Forensic Science Research and Development.” The new "focus" is "Insights and Innovations in Forensic Science: Progressing to the Future." The conference website is devoid of speakers and information on the sessions, but there are placeholders for plenary, keynote, and even invited speakers.

The "Conference Chairperson" is "Prof. Anna Barbaro, Association of Women Forensic Experts, Italy." The "view biography" link by her name produces an empty drop-down display. The "Conference Co-Chairman" is "Dr. Ruwan Uduwerage-Perera, University of East London, United Kingdom." The university's website identifies him as a senior lecturer with no doctoral degree. He is a public figure, having been the first General Secretary of the National Black Police Association. A 2015 newspaper headline reads "Ruwan Uduwerage-Perera: Lib Dem ethnic minority group chairman re-instated after being controversially ejected last month." The drop-down bio for him speaks of his passion to "reducing the mystic about criminology and developing practitioner academics within the workplace."

At the top of the list of "Organizing Committee Members" in the email is "Dr. Anthony Schembri, University of South Florida, United States." No such person is on the faculty of USF (according to the online directory for the university), but the Anthony Schembri pictured on the conference website has had a distinguished career in law enforcement. Apparently, the "Dr." is an honorary degree from the Global Scientific Guild.

The group behind the events is difficult to locate. GoDaddy.com registered the domain name, globalscientificguild.com, in July, 2019, listing the registrant organization as Global Scientific Guild, Karnataka, India. The guild is not even creative or transparent enough to invent a last name and title for the signature line of its spam, leaving us with "Sandy B" as the person "awaiting your swift and favorable reply." Still, if you are lonely, you could give Sandy (or whoever it is) a call at +91 9491 456 452, where "We Feel Happy to Talk." Sandy must be extremely knowledgeable, as his or her title is "Forensic Science."

Pangea Global Events is dedicated to a qualitative collective knowledge sharing

Pangea Global Events' "Scientific PAGES is dedicated to provide a global level platform for the Scholars, Students, Researchers and Business Entities to make them experience a qualitative collective knowledge sharing".  Its "organizing committee members and experts ... make our events more focus and fascinate." Its "vast subscribed ... database will "add more applauds". PAGES "strongly believe that the scientific community is the true driving force of civilization" and worries that "the purpose of conferences is not reaching out Developing & 3rd World Countries".

Yet, PAGES spammed me for a conference in Paris on "Latest and Future Innovations of Toxicology in the awake of Pandemic". The website for this Global Conference on Toxicology (GCT- 2021) lists a "Scientific Board" with one US member -- "Dr. Dariush Ilghari, The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, USA". No such name appears on the faculty and staff directory of this college. The conference's biography for Dr. Ilghari describes a more limited connection. He is a graduate of the college and "an MTM pharmacist, working for SinfoniaRx". Unlike Dr. Ilghari, I have no medically related training (and only one co-authored article, unrelated to toxicology, to my credit in a medical journal). Those facts did not diminish PAGES' "immense pleasure and honor to invite [me] as an Organizing Committee Member".

It is not obvious what the "European Society of Medicine" is. It might be a creation of the alleged predatory publisher Knowledge Enterprises, Inc. (KEI).

BEST COMMENTS RECEIVED

Financial complaints

  • January 26, 2021: Seeing that COVID was going to keep the border closed ... , I wrote Dr. Osman and asked for my $849 USD back. Still asking. He asked me to present virtually and I'm not interested. Still waiting for my money.
  • May 10, 2021: Unfortunately I paid $271.00. I then got an email saying that the bank had cancelled my payment and asking me to repay. ... I checked with the bank. There was no cancellation of payment. Unfortunately my 271 is gone. ... I should have been smarter.
  • July 16, 2021: [I] contracted AMEX to dispute the registration charge. Within minutes, I got a response from AMEX: "We're writing to let you know that, as a result of our investigation, we've credited your account for $699.00, which will appear on your next statement." Clearly, AMEX is aware of the scam!

Inappropriate solicitations

  • November 30, 2020: The first giveaway is that I AM NOT in radiology nor general medicine, then the misspelled email of “Dr Osman” but also that when trying the reply address what came up was not a European society of medicine email address but jm4y-kei@in.frontapp.com ...
  • January 17, 2021: Reports an invitation soliciting "joining the Pathology session." His or her specialty? Speech-language pathology.
  • February 5, 2021: The funniest thing is that he invited me to talk about a paper that I published 8 years ago!
  • February 11, 2021: I work in a very specialized, non medical field .... Its such an inappropriate request to present at a general medical conference.
  • April 25, 2021: "I am a veterinarian btw, so maybe he should do his homework before sending emails out like candy flying out of a pez dispenser." (In response to the request for a talk in the "core session" on physiology from the author of the "paper from a while ago [that] was particularly interesting for [Dr. Osman]: 'Canine Cognitive Dysfunction: Pathophysiology.'" )
  • April 29, 2021: Reports an invitation from the eclectic Dr. Osman for a presentation in a "core session" on "Radiology" based on the "particularly interesting" paper on "In Trauma-Exposed Individuals" even though the author is "not in radiology" and the paper obviously "has a longer name than 'In Trauma-Exposed Individuals.'"

Oblivious responses

  • January 2, 2021: A recipient of the email sent "Dr. Osman" an e-mail complaining about the "fishing technique for getting money with a fake meeting." Unperturbed, Dr. Osman replied, "I understand. Might a student or colleague be available instead?"
  • February 8, 2021: "He refused to be deterred when I pointed out that my paper to which he referred so flatteringly had been published six years previously, and I had done no further work on the cohort since then - IMO, people attended conferences to learn new information, not dusty old stuff. Also, I could not see how my subject matter, even if updated, would fit into any of the conference sessions."

No responses

  • February 1, 2021: I asked about [Dr. Osman's] own field of research and publications. Never got an answer. SILENCE
  • July 16, 2021: I was contacted in April ... . I fell for it and registered. Then when I tried to access the conference website from a link within "Dr. Osman"'s original solicitation email, it got flagged by my university's cyber-traffic watchdog as a fraudulent site.[But a] conference site ... had a program with the session in which I was supposed to present, the title I had provided for my presentation, and even photo of me! Confused, I decided to contact the conference organizers through their legit-looking website to get clarification. I did it 3 times, and got no response.

No such place

  • February 9, 2021: I happen to live in Geneva Switzerland. I decided that the easiest way to find out ... was to just go by rue le corbusier 12. [T]here was no sign, no way to ring and not even a letterbox of any european organisation of anything that could be found there.
  • July 26, 2021: [C]hecking ... 12, Rue le Corbuisier, it seems the people at 'ESM' have misspelled the name of this famous architect, as no such street exists in Genève. But at 12, Rue Le-Corbusier (without the "i"), there are at least two ophtalmologists. Link: https://www.local.ch/fr/q/rue-le-corbusier-12-1208-geneve.

Incompetent conferences

  • November 10, 2021: [The hotel] inform[ed] me that a congress is indeed scheduled by ESMED in their Waterfront hall, but they also received complaints from several (upcoming) hotel guests that it was badly organised and they believed it to be a scam.
  • November 12, 2021: ... Dr Osman ... invited my contribution to a special section on colorectal cancer. I decided to participate only online and am watching on YouTube ... right now. [B]y far the worst meeting I have ever attended: From 5 parallel sessions only one is transmitted on YouTube; transmission is a simple camera located in the room and slides are not projected to the computer screen; the audio quality os terrible ... ; the communication of program changes did not work and there is no updated program available online; the special session on colorectal cancer does not exist, after all.

Other peculiarities

  • January 20, 2021: It is strange that their web-page does not contain the history of this society and membership link does not work.
  • September 7, 2021: I have discovered that the e-mails M. Osman sends inviting participation ... originate from Pakistan, either Karachi or Lahore.

Swiss Chinese Global Forums

Founded on August 28, 2019, the Swiss Chinese Law Association already advertises eleven "Global Forums" on a busy webpage full of pictures and slogans zooming in and sliding by. The website includes a "SCLA Future Cloud," whatever that is. The About page includes "The Voice," which speaks of "[l]awyers in Switzerland [whose] experience ... goes back to at least the international arbitration between the UK and the USA on the Alabama case" and "Chinese lawyers [whose] first-hand experience of the new China [is] based on ancestral roots and on their deep understanding of the benefits of harmony." These lawyers, it assures us, "will be able to contribute to the development of new solutions for the benefit of our clients, in our respective countries, and beyond, without forgetting what the Romans had already stated so clearly: 'ius est ars boni et aequi'."

The SCLA's "Mission and Values" include "Inspire the future of legal profession" and "Motivate next generation." Despite the bilateral name, anyone can "Apply for the Membership."

The Global Forum invited me to attend "as a member from ABA." Being among the hundreds of thousands of American Bar Association members with no expertise in the field, I did not "make the forum submission [for possible publication] in the Swiss Chinese Law Review Journal." I could not find a webpage with a specific program for the talks on Friday, but there were large pictures and biographies for the speakers.

The Chinese and Swiss lawyers designated as the association's leaders may be bona fide stewards of a  farsighted organization, but what are these lawyers thinking when they designate commercial mass mail as confidential and privileged? They also enjoy a speed dating-like method of intellectual discourse "to exchange the newest and most brilliant plan."

The Flaky Academic Journals blog has some information on the people behind the association's name.

Subject: Invitation for David Kaye -EU-China Investment Forum and the Investment Mediation Program
    To David Kaye,
You are invited to join as a delegate for the SCLA EU-China Investment Forum(to be held on 13.00 CET, 26th Friday) as well as the Investment Mediation Expert Training Program (to be held on 13.00 CET, 27th Saturday) online.
I attached the agendas for your reference. To register the program, please visit: ... .
The Comprehensive Agreement on Investment between China and the EU represents a step towards a closer integration, on equal terms, between these two great economic powers. Many of the assumptions that we have taken for granted regarding the future of international law and business may be wrong. Are businesses and lawyers ready for these future transformations? What will it mean for investments in technology, a mainstay of China’s industrial relations with the rest of the world for the past forty years? How should lawyers approach resolving international disputes in a multilateral world? These essential questions and more will be at the heart of the SCLA’s upcoming global forum on EU-China Investment (March 26th ) as well as the Mediation in Investment Training Program (March 27th ).
The answer will of course require both theory and practice. Therefore, the SCLA is proud to present a prestigious line-up of experienced speakers to share their valuable knowledge at our forum, followed by a one-day training session for participants to test their skills in an international investment mock mediation. For the first time, our forum includes not only lawyers and academics but other professions with key insights on relations between China and the rest of the world, including senior management, government advice and journalism.
Opening on the meaning of the CAI will be Xiaobing Tang, (former senior counsellor at the WTO), Loudres Casanvoa(director of Cornell University’s Emerging Markets Institute), Thomas Pauken (Commentor at CCTV China), Rotem Kopel (CEO at Mind Matters Foundation); Following that, the event will discuss the technology and investment, which is moderated by the former CEO of Sony Europe Nicolas Babin, jointly held by Safak Herdem (Founder of the Herdem Law), Balaz Nemethi (President at Decentralized Identity Foundation), Prathiba Shah (COO at Skyhive) and Michele Char(COO at Blue Tree); The 2nd panel will focus the dispute resolution, and it will be moderated by Ana Jaimes(Lawyer at Stein Ray LLP), John Chigbu (Managing Partner at Chigbu & Co, LLP), Nacmettin Kayma (US country director at Present Office of Turkey), Jiaxi Jiang (Partner at Jurisino Law Group), Federico Antich (Antich Law) , Philip Hackett QC(Barrister at 36 Group).
The 3rd SCLA Mediation Expert Training program in investment mediation is designed for a small group training to practice, where the delegates will observe and engage in the practice of inter-state investment mediation. The experienced trainers will provide in-hand guidance for the participants during the practice.
The game is changing and yesterday’s rules are no guarantee for success. Take this opportunity to join us to sharpen your understanding against the most up-to-date expertise and to enjoy a challenging training session that will prepare you for a multilateral world while making valuable new contacts in Europe, China and the wider world. If multilateralism means cooperation, join those who are already working together and sharing knowledge.

Subject: Invitation for David Kaye-EU GDPR – Chinese PIPL Perspectives on Data Protection Seminar
I am writing to invite you to the seminar of EU GDPR – Chinese PIPL Perspectives on Data Protection, which to be held on next Monday 12th, at 9am-11am CET Time. Please register the seminar here: www.ecadap.com/webinars .
This webinar is developed by the initiative of European-Chinese Avenue for Data Protection, an initiative co-developed by Swiss Chinese Law Association and European Institute for Privacy, Audit, Compliance & Certification (EIPACC) and the International Data Protection Academy (PRIVACAD).
These founding partners share the philosophy of abridging data protection professionalism between the European Union and China (Asia at large) and initiate ECADAP as a joint platform and by doing so creating a leeway to promote data protection professionalism amongst professionals and those willing to contribute to this societal cause. In joint efforts we are able to reach to over 300,000 data protection professionals active around the globe.
This webinar, which to be held on Monday 12th, at 9am-11am CET Time, will focus on the exchanges on the private data protection between European and Chinese Experts. To register for the seminar, please visit: www.ecadap.com/webinars .
We hope to meet you there soon with our warmest regards.

International Conference of Information and Communication Technology (ICICT) "focuses to propagate the momentous significance"

The International Conference of Information and Communication Technology (ICICT) plainly is a Chinese venture, with the organizers said to be the Hunan University of Finance and Economics and the IRNet International Academic Communication Centre. One website of the latter organization (http://www.allconfs.org/web_contact_en.asp?uid=4738) gives an address of 洪山区雄楚大道, which refers to the Hongshan district of Wuhan. The "Engilish" version of another website for ICICT (http://www.interscience.org.cn/en/) is mostly hanzi and boasts 7,891 Meetings with 238,531 attendees.

The spam I received invited me and 98 other lucky people to join the Technical Program Committee for the ICICT 2020 scheduled for November in Wuhan. I hope the other sought-after members are more qualified than I. I also hope they find their way to the right conference. A Google search for ICICT 2020 returns a notice that "The International Conference on Information and Computer Technologies (ICICT), is an annual conference hold [sic] each year in United States" (see www.icict.org). If that is not confusing enough, another ICICT 2020 was the 5th Scopus-Indexed IEEE International Conference on Inventive Computation Technologies. It appears to have been a more substantial academic conference, but the Wuhan event "focuses to propagate the momentous significance of Science and Engineering" (https://easychair.org/cfp/ICICT-2020).

Remarks on BIT Conferences from Attendees

The vast majority of the postings on Flaky Academic Conferences are responses to spam to attend conferences whose quality, judging from the spam and the websites, is open to question. Occasionally, I hear from people who attended or come across comments from actual attendees posted elsewhere on the Web. The following are replies on Researchgate.net to Jessica Lilian Bell of Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg. She asked:
Is the BIT World cancer congress (http://www.bitlifesciences.com/cancer2014/) a legitimate conference. If so, what is it like?
She was suspicious because she "was invited to go give a talk, but still have to pay for half the costs." Three people related their experiences:
  • I already attended once, will not ever do it again. It's all business not science. --Carolina Santamaría-Ulloa, University of Costa Rica, Feb. 26, 2016
  • I also get many invitations from them. As a matter of fact, I attended once too in Dalian. Conference actually takes place at the venue and delegates are also around but they just need money for everything from registration to hotel (if you opt for it). They have packages, you can select. They provide the facilities you select in the package. Even the hotel is five star. No problem.
If you are interested in sight seeing, you can go separately. NO need to pay them unnecessary. Now whenever I get an invitation, I just ask them to pay for my visit and cover all my expenses right from the air ticket to accommodation. Then they will not bother you except the one mail that they cannot do this because of financial constraints and all excuses. I just write them if you want to call me as a speaker, just arrange my visit. That's it.
Next time u get an invite, try this. Hopefully you may get a sponsored trip. :) --Alok Nahata, Harisingh Gour University, Oct, 12, 2017

The Coronavirus Research International Society Wants an International Congress in San Francisco

Would a real coronavirus research society schedule an in-person international meeting for December 2020? The "Coronavirus Research International Society" has. The spam for "the International Congress on Coronaviruses (ICCovid), to be held on December 7-9, 2020 in San Francisco" describes the society as "a non-profit organization, a global network of researchers and stakeholders sharing the common goal to conquer coronaviruses" and adds that it "facilitates the development of antiviral drugs and vaccines for the prevention and treatment of coronavirus." A webpage at cvriri.com tells us that the Society is the "International hub to save mankind from coronavirus."

The society uses two acronyms: COVRISO and CVIRI and two websites that provide the same contact information. As of June 24, 2020, the Society's website at covriso.com lists no members but invites individuals and corporations to "Join Membership Today" because "The membeship has its privildeges." It lists no one in charge of the Society. The domain name covriso.com was created on May 5, 2020; cviri.com has been around since 2013. A search of Guidestar.org's comprehensive list of nonprofit organizations turns up nothing for this society. Maybe it is too new.

The addresses on the websites are, for "Administrative Offices," 1159 Sonora Court, Suite 345, Sunnyvale, CA 94086, USA, and for "Mailing Address," P.O. Box 151, Moffett Field, CA 94035 USA. The address or telephone numbers of 415-231-6202 or 855-920-4778 (fax) are used by other organizations. Opencorporates has a listing for the Cleantech Institute (Lloyd Tran, agent) and the Alzheimer International Society for this address. DomainBigData lists Lloyd Tran as the historic registrant for the latter society. (Currently, the domains for the coronoavirus society are registered by Godaddy.com.) Lloyd L. Tran describes himself as "a Vietnamese American scientist, with more than 25 year experience in drug discovery and business development in pharmaceutical industry." Currently, "Lloyd focuses on the development of new drugs for the prevention and treatment of Covid-19."

The websites of the Alzheimer International Society and the Coronavirus Research International Society appear to be the intertwined work of the same individual or individuals. The alzint.com/about.html webpage on the Alzheimer Society site begins "Welcome To Coronavirus Research International Society™." The two websites have the same look and feel, with overlapping text and images. The Alzheimer Society International Conference is slated for November at the same airport hotel with the same allegedly discounted room rate.* The two conferences use the same image of the Golden Gate Bridge in their advertising.

NOTE
* The coronavirus conference promises "DISCOUNT ROOM RATES FOR ICCovid 2020 PARTICIPANTS":
